Wayne State University (WSU) operates its human participant research programs under a Federal Wide Assurance (FWA) with the Department of Health and Human Services. The FWA is on file with the Office for Human Research Protection, and carries an identification number of: FWA 00002460. The most current expiration date for this FWA can be found by clicking on the Federal Wide Assurance link above.
In accordance with this FWA, the Human Investigation Committee (HIC) is the primary Institutional Review Board (IRB) for WSU and its affiliated heath care institutions (Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Receiving Hospital/University Health Center, Sinai-Grace Hospital, Harper University Hospital, Huron Valley/Sinai Hospital, Hutzel Women's Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, John D. Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center, and the Michigan Orthopedic Surgery Hospital).

- Biosafety Training
- November 23 2009 at 2:00 PMGordon H. Scott HallBiosafety Training is required for all employees who work with materials that are handled at Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2), including work with human blood, body fluids, tissue, cell lines, animals infected with human pathogens, mammalian viruses, etc. This training is required annually. Employees who have taken this class at least once at WSU may take the annual refresher online. The training session for those taking this course for the first time or who prefer to retrain in the classroom setting, may attend the next session on Wednesday, August 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in 3125 Scott Hall. The seminar will feature guest speaker, Charles Wilkie, Pfetschinger-Habermann professor, Polymer and Organic Chemistry, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.
- Basic Radiation Safety Training
- December 8 2009 at 1:00 PM5425 WoodwardBasic radiation safety training is required for all employees using radioactive materials in the laboratory. The lecture is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at 5425 Woodward, Suite 300. The following Monday from 1 to 2:30 p.m., all training attendees must take and pass a written Radiological Health Exam at the same location. Students attending this training this session should discuss with their PI the radioactive materials they will be working with prior to attending the training. All employees and students who continue to use radioactive materials in the laboratory and have taken basic radiation safety training are required annually to take an online refresher course. - OSHA Lab Standard Training

This session addresses chemical safety and is required once for all employees who work in a lab with hazardous chemicals. Topics include: Contents of the OSHA Lab Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) WSU Chemical Hygiene Plan Physical and health hazards of chemicals Safety equipment in the laboratory Safe handling and storage of chemicals Material Safety Data Sheets and other information sources Personal protective equipment The next session will be held on Friday, August 7 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at 3125 Scott Hall. - Hazardous Waste/Emergency Procedures Training
- December 10 2009 at 11:30 AM5425 WoodwardThe Office of Environmental Health & Safety is pleased to host the Hazardous Waste/Emergency Procedures training. This session addresses handling, storage and disposal of chemical hazardous waste and is required annually for all employees generating hazardous waste. Topics include: Explanation of EPA Resource Conversation & Recovery Act (RCRA) Laboratory's responsibilities as a hazardous waste generator Definitions of hazardous waste Procedures for collection, labeling, storage and removal of waste Spills and other hazardous materials releases Evacuations and emergency procedures The training will be held on Friday, August 7 from 11 a.m. to noon at 3125 Scott Hall.
